Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while presenting the state Budget for 2026–27 on Friday, announced that a second airport will be developed for Bengaluru. The new airport is planned to ease congestion at the city’s Kempegowda International Airport.
The Chief Minister said a feasibility report for the project will be prepared after taking technical advice from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
"To decongest Kempegowda International Airport, which has emerged as the country's third largest airport, a second airport will be developed in Bengaluru for which a feasibility report will be prepared after obtaining technical advice from the Airports Authority of India," Siddaramaiah said.
Officials from the AAI have already visited the three sites that were shortlisted for Bengaluru’s second international airport. The state government had earlier identified three possible locations — two sites on Kanakapura Road near Harohalli and another on Kunigal Road in Nelamangala.
Siddaramaiah also said that the government has so far released Rs 1,593 crore as grants for the development of seven domestic airports in the state. “For the current year, Rs 200 crore has been earmarked,” he said. He added that a flight training school and aircraft manufacturing or assembly activities will be taken up in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode at Vijayapura and Shivamogga airports respectively.
