Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday expressed strong support for the 'one nation, one election' initiative recently approved by the Union Cabinet.
In a Facebook post, Tamang welcomed the Union government's decision to move towards simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, alongside urban and panchayat elections, within the next 100 days.
Tamang praised the proposal, which is based on recommendations from a high-level committee led by former president Ram Nath Kovind. He aligned his endorsement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making Indian democracy "more vibrant and participatory."
Tamang, leader of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), which is part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), highlighted several advantages of holding elections simultaneously. He emphasised economic efficiency, streamlined governance, and the potential for higher voter participation.
“A unified election process simplifies voting, promotes greater engagement, and contributes to faster economic growth,” he noted.
The 'one nation, one election' concept aims to conduct polls for both parliamentary and state legislative bodies at the same time, followed by synchronised local body elections within a specific timeframe.
Sikkim, Tamang reminded, has traditionally held simultaneous elections for its assembly and the Lok Sabha, making the state familiar with the concept.
