The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts across Sikkim, forecasting intense rain and snowfall in the coming hours.
The latest Nowcast Weather Warning from the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok indicates that the districts of Mangan, Gyalshing, Pakyong, Soreng, Namchi, and the state capital, Gangtok, will be particularly affected by heavy downpours and snow in higher altitudes.
In light of these warnings, authorities have strongly urged residents to refrain from travel, especially in areas susceptible to landslides and mudslides.
Continuous rainfall raises the risk of ground instability, posing significant hazards to those venturing into vulnerable regions. The IMD has also highlighted the potential for considerable disruption, especially along roads leading to hilly areas.
Sikkim's disaster management agencies are on high alert, prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise as weather conditions worsen. The public is encouraged to adhere to safety guidelines and stay informed about local weather updates.
Among the most affected areas is the Rang-Rang bridge, known as the "gateway to North Sikkim," which sustained severe damage yesterday, isolating the Mangan district headquarters from the rest of the state.
The alternative route via Dzongu is currently impassable due to previous damage to the Sankhalang bridge, which has yet to be fully repaired.
Efforts to restore connectivity are ongoing, but the incessant rain has been hampering progress. Additionally, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has opened the Teesta Low Dam III and IV to release excess water from its reservoirs, cautioning residents along the Teesta River to avoid the riverbanks due to heightened flood risks.
Traffic along National Highway 10 has been significantly disrupted, with vehicles facing delays of three to four hours due to multiple landslides. Tourists travelling to and from Gangtok are advised to take the alternate route via Lava and Kalimpong to bypass bottlenecks.
The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has issued a public advisory, urging residents to exercise caution.
"We request all citizens to avoid unnecessary travel unless it is absolutely essential and to stay safe and vigilant," said SKM spokesperson Bikas Basnet. He also called upon party workers to assist in rescue and relief efforts wherever required.
