Sikkim’s sole road to Indian mainland, NH-10, to shut for repairs

NHIDCL has announced the closure of the Sevoke–Rangpo stretch of NH-10 from 9 am to 6 pm on May 15, 17, and 19 for essential repairs. The highway is Sikkim’s only link to the plains and is vital for trade and tourism.

Vehicles stranded on NH-10 as repair work continues, disrupting traffic and causing significant delays.

The Sevoke–Rangpo stretch of National Highway 10 (NH-10), a vital lifeline connecting Sikkim with the rest of India, will remain closed from 9 am to 6 pm on May 15, 17, and 19 for essential repair and protection work, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) announced in an official notification.

The NHIDCL, under the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, stated that the temporary closure is necessary to stabilise vulnerable slopes and repair monsoon damage along the 52.1-kilometre stretch, which runs parallel to the Teesta River.

The agency has urged commuters to plan alternative routes and advised heavy goods vehicles to avoid the route during these periods.

National Highway 10 is the sole road link connecting West Bengal and Sikkim, making it critical for both civilian and military transport, including access to the Nathu La border with China.

The highway also serves as a major conduit for tourism, trade, and daily travel in the region. The NHIDCL noted that landslides and erosion are common along this route, especially during the monsoon season, leading to frequent closures and disruptions.

In recent years, NH-10 has faced multiple closures due to landslides and severe weather. In September 2024, heavy rains triggered multiple landslides that once again rendered the highway impassable, causing significant disruptions to traffic and trade. Similarly, in July 2021, torrential rains led to landslides at the 29th Mile area, resulting in extended road blockages and traffic jams.

Member of Parliament from Darjeeling, Raju Bista recently reviewed the ongoing repair and reconstruction work on NH-10, the critical lifeline connecting Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Dooars, and Sikkim, being undertaken by the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

He highlighted the importance of the project for regional connectivity, national security, and economic growth, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for their commitment to the region's infrastructure development.

“Improved central-agency management will ensure timely repair, maintenance and expansion of NH-10, which will benefit the local people, students, tourists, trade, and especially our drivers' community,” BJP MP Raju Bista had noted earlier, highlighting the importance of the highway for the region.

Local authorities have issued travel advisories in light of the planned closures, urging motorists to avoid the route on the affected dates and to stay updated on road conditions. NHIDCL has indicated that further alerts may be issued if weather conditions worsen or additional damage is detected.
