Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday announced that 500 constables will be recruited in the Sikkim Police, with 30 per cent of the vacancies reserved for women, in a move aimed at strengthening the state’s law enforcement system and improving gender representation in the force.
The announcement was made on March 6 while the Chief Minister addressed the 18th Raising Day celebrations of the Third Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) at Manglay in Sikkim.
Addressing officers and personnel, Tamang said the occasion marked an important milestone for the battalion and reflected its commitment to maintaining peace and law and order in the Himalayan state.
“The primary responsibility of the police is to uphold law and order and safeguard society from elements that threaten peace and harmony. In fulfilling this duty, the Sikkim Police have consistently demonstrated commendable professionalism and dedication,” he said.
Tamang emphasised the crucial role played by the Third IRBn, noting that the battalion provides armed personnel to support district police units during security duties and law enforcement operations.

He added that the IRBn remains prepared for deployment across Sikkim and, when required, in other states during emergencies, elections and other sensitive assignments.
“The battalion continues to play a vital role in strengthening the state’s security framework,” the Chief Minister said.
Tamang also cautioned against attempts to disturb social harmony and stressed that such acts must be dealt with strictly under the law.
“Attempts to disrupt peace in society must be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law to ensure harmony prevails,” he stated.
During the programme, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Teesta Command Block, a newly constructed administrative building for the Third IRBn. He said the new facility would significantly improve the battalion’s administrative efficiency and operational readiness.
Officials said the infrastructure upgrade and fresh recruitment drive are part of the state government’s broader efforts to modernise policing and strengthen internal security in Sikkim.
