Residents of Barak Valley in Assam can rejoice as Bangladesh plans to open a visa centre in Silchar, addressing the long-standing demand for easier access to travel permits.
Ruhul Amin, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner in Guwahati, confirmed the decision, acknowledging the significant demand for visas from Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts. The centre's location in Silchar, Cachar's headquarters, will offer convenient access for residents.
Although an opening date is yet to be announced, Amin assured that the process is underway. The centre will handle visa applications and issuance, streamlining the travel process for those seeking to visit Bangladesh.
The news extends beyond visas, with a proposal for a border market at Harinagar part II of Katigorah being evaluated. The 500-bigha market on the Surma riverbank holds the potential to strengthen economic ties and cultural exchange between border communities.
Amin highlighted the Bangladesh government's commitment to fostering stronger relations with India. These initiatives, including the visa centre and border market, aim to build goodwill and collaboration between people living in border areas.
"The Bangladesh government was considering opening two such markets to establish goodwill and coordination among the people living in the border areas of the two countries," he said.
"Our government always emphasises on maintaining a good relationship with India," Amin added.
