Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma meets Singapore Acting High Commissioner Alice Cheng in New Delhi to discuss cooperation in the Zubeen Garg death investigation.

The investigation into the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has gained fresh momentum, with Singapore police agreeing to meet the Assam Police team on 21 October, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday.

Taking to X, Sarma wrote, “Another step forward towards justice for our beloved Zubeen. The Singapore Police authorities will meet the Assam Police team led by Sri Munna Gupta, ADGP and Head of SIT, on 21st October.” He added, “Our collective resolve remains, Justice for Zubeen will prevail.”

The development comes weeks after Garg’s sudden death in Singapore, which sent shockwaves across Assam and the Indian music fraternity. The 52-year-old artist, a cultural icon in the Northeast, had been visiting Singapore when he was found dead under circumstances that remain under investigation. His death sparked widespread grief, public protests, and demands for an impartial probe.

Although the Chief Minister did not specify whether the Assam Police team would travel to Singapore or whether the meeting would take place through diplomatic coordination, the announcement marks the first formal interaction between the law enforcement agencies of both countries since the tragedy.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Additional Director General of Police Munna Gupta has been conducting inquiries into Garg’s death, seeking information and cooperation from Singapore authorities through diplomatic channels.

Sarma had earlier met Acting High Commissioner of Singapore to India, Alice Cheng, as well as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi to discuss the matter. He urged both to ensure that Singapore extended full cooperation to the Assam Police in its investigation.

The meeting between the two police teams is expected to focus on findings from the autopsy conducted in Singapore, witness statements, and digital evidence, including videos and communications from Garg’s final days.

The Assamese government has maintained that it will pursue every possible avenue to ascertain the truth. “The state government stands firmly behind the family and fans of Zubeen Garg,” Sarma had said earlier, assuring that “no stone will be left unturned in the quest for justice.”

Public sentiment in Assam continues to run high, with fans across the state holding candlelight vigils and musical tributes in Garg’s memory. His death has not only left a void in the Assamese cultural landscape but also spurred calls for greater support and safety for artists travelling abroad.

The meeting scheduled for 21 October is being seen as a critical turning point in the cross-border investigation, offering a chance to piece together the unanswered questions surrounding the singer’s untimely death.
