An eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to ensure speedy investigation into the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Chhattisgarh's Durg city, police sources said on Wednesday.
Jitendra Shukla, Superintendent of Police (SP), Durg, had issued the order in this regard on Tuesday.
The team will hold daily proceedings to ensure that the inquiry is completed as soon as possible and submit the chargesheet in the court. Further, the supervising officer will also ensure necessary action for a timely and speedy trial of the case, the order stated.
The SIT will be led by Padmashri Tanwar, Additional Superintendent of Police (IUCAW-Investigative Unit for Crime Against Women), Durg, and will have seven other members, including Mohan Nagar Police Station House Officer Shiv Prasad Chandra.
The girl had gone missing in Durg was sexually assaulted and murdered by her uncle in Mohan Nagar area here on April 6.
On the occasion of the Navratri festival, the victim had gone to her grandmother's residence for ‘Kanya Pujan’ when her 24-year-old uncle sexually abused her, killed her and later hid the body in a neighbour's car, police sources said.
Members from various social organisations came on streets here on Tuesday to condemn the tragic incident and Congress workers burnt effigies of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in various districts.
Meanwhile. the Durg district bar council has declared that it would not represent the accused in the court.
The Yadav community to which the victim belonged, has also sought an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the rape and murder case. They also submitted a memorandum to the Durg collector, and sought Rs 50 lakh financial aid for the girl's mother and a government job for her.
The Opposition has demanded the resignation of Deputy CM Vijay Sharma, who also holds the Home portfolio, blaming that the law and order situation has gone worse.
