The Uttarakhand Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the killing of Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who died from injuries suffered in an assault on December 9. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said that, based on the initial probe so far, there is no proof to indicate that the incident was racially motivated.

As per the police findings, the accused, Awasthi, reportedly picked up a knife from a nearby egg cart and stabbed Anjel. Police have gathered CCTV footage from the area and recorded statements of local residents.

SSP Singh said that no evidence of racial slurs has been found during the investigation so far, despite claims made on social media and by the victim’s father.

Police said the incident began during a party hosted by Suraj Khwas, a native of Manipur, where an argument broke out between two groups and later escalated. The accused has no previous criminal record, officials said.

SSP Singh also referred to the presence of a large number of students from the Northeast in Dehradun. He said more than 2,000 such students study in the city, including around 250 from Tripura. He added that the police remain committed to student safety and will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
