A special investigation team (SIT) visited the Nabha jail on Monday to question former cabinet minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia regarding missing land records. Majithia was interrogated for about two-and-a-half hours by the SIT led by Patiala SSP Varun Sharma.
The questioning was conducted following court orders in connection with an FIR lodged against Majithia in 2022 at the Majitha police station. The SIT had sought judicial permission before proceeding with the interrogation.
Majithia was initially booked under the NDPS Act in December 2021 during the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government. He spent more than five months in Patiala jail before being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2022. On June 25 this year, he was arrested at his residence in Amritsar under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau had recently submitted a comprehensive 40,000-page chargesheet against him in a Mohali court with regard to a disproportionate assets case. On August 18, a Mohali court declined Majithia’s bail plea and extended his judicial custody till August 28.
