The investigation into the missing gold at the Sabarimala hill shrine has reached the doorstep of former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran, who was questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) last week. The senior CPI(M) leader confirmed the development on Tuesday, explaining that his statement was recorded because the alleged loss occurred while he held the ministerial portfolio.
The SIT’s move to question him follows the release of controversial photographs by RSP leader Shibu Baby John, which showed Surendran alongside the case's prime accused, Unnikrishnan Potty.
Beyond the former minister, the probe has also extended to other high-ranking figures, including PS Prasanth, the immediate former president of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).
The scandal, which centers on gold missing from the temple's Dwarapalaka idols and the Sreekovil doorframes, has already resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals, including two other former TDB presidents. This high-stakes inquiry was launched following a directive from the High Court, which earlier this month granted the SIT a six-month extension to complete its work and finalise the accountability for the security breach at the sacred site.
