The statehood movement in Ladakh turned into violence, arson, and street clashes in Leh on Wednesday.


The Union Home Ministry has said the situation in Ladakh is under control and that there have been no fresh incidents of violence reported in the Union Territory (UT).

 

In its statement, the home ministry also urged individuals to refrain from circulating old and provocative videos in the media and on social media platforms.

 

“The unfortunate incidents that happened earlier on Wednesday were brought under control by 4 pm,” the statement said.

 

The ministry has said the Central government stands committed to the aspiration of the people of Ladakh by providing adequate constitutional safeguards.

Police and paramilitary forces, deployed in strength across the town, lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control, they added.

On Wednesday, as many as four people were killed and more than 70 were injured after protesters torched the BJP office in Leh and clashed with the security forces.

 

Ladakh has been demanding constitutional guarantees, including the extension of the Sixth Schedule, statehood, and job reservations.

Multiple rounds of talks between the high-powered committee nominated by the MHA and representative bodies in Ladakh have ended in a deadlock.

 

Residents of Ladakh have organised several sit-in protests, peace marches, and hunger strikes. However, all efforts have so far yielded no results.

Mounting frustration among the youth turned into Wednesday’s violence, leading to clashes between protesters, the police, and the CRPF.
