A tragic accident occurred on Friday afternoon at the Bahadurpur stone quarry under Nalhati police station in Birbhum, when a sudden landslide buried several workers. Six quarry workers lost their lives, while three others sustained serious injuries.
"The workers were engaged in regular stone extraction around 2 pm when a section of the quarry collapsed, trapping nine people under the debris. Fellow workers from nearby quarries rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. Six bodies were recovered from under the rubble, while three injured workers were pulled out and taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment,” said a police officer.
Police from Nalhati station reached the site immediately after receiving information. Rescue efforts are still underway to ensure no other workers remain trapped.
One of the injured has been identified as Firoz Sheikh (30), a resident of Harioka village under Nalhati police station. His relative, Shafiqul Alam, confirmed that Firoz was working in the quarry when the landslide struck.
Driver Nazirul Sheikh, who helped transport the injured, said, “I was called around 2 pm to bring people to the hospital. I brought four, while two others came in another car. Six people have already died. I only know there was an accident in the mine.”
The identities of the other deceased and injured workers are yet to be confirmed, though most of them are believed to be local residents engaged in quarry work.
Hospital sources stated that the condition of the three injured is critical. If their condition stabilises, they may be shifted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.
Authorities are continuing efforts to clear the debris and investigate the cause of the landslide.
