Six persons, including a minor boy, were arrested for allegedly beating three Jain monks with sticks and sharp weapons in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday in Singoli town of Madhya Pradesh, the police said. The accused have allegedly attacked the monks for refusing to give money to them.
According to the police, accused Ganpat Nayak, Gopal Bhoe, Kanhaiya Lal, Raju Bhoe, Babu Sharma and the minor boy hailed from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, which is close to Neemuch.
"Jain monks Shailesh Muni Ji, Balbhadra Muni Ji, and Munindra Muni Ji had stopped to take rest at a Hanuman temple when the accused arrived there on three motorcycles and demanded money from them after consuming liquor," Bhura Lal Bhabhar, Singoli police station SHO, told mediapersons.
The police said the three monks sustained injuries on their heads and back, and were transferred to a nearby hospital but they refused medical treatment citing religious customs.
They were reportedly shifted to a medical facility run by the Jain community after sunrise on Monday.
All six accused were held and have been booked under the strict laws of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Neemuch Superintendent of Police (SP ) Ankit Jaiswal said.
Meanwhile, the Jain community protested the attack by calling a bandh (shutdown) in Singoli town on Monday. Shops were closed in response to the call.
