Six persons were killed and four others seriously injured after an Innova taxi plunged into a deep gorge on the Chamba-Pathankot National Highway in Himachal Pradesh early Monday morning.
The accident occurred around 3 am near Kakira Ghar in the Tunuhati area when the vehicle, travelling from Dharamshala to Dalhousie, reportedly lost control and fell nearly 150 metres down a gorge.
Police said 10 people were travelling in the taxi, most of them tourists from Gujarat. Heavy rainfall at the time of the accident is suspected to have made the road slippery, leading to the crash.
Locals alerted authorities after hearing a loud sound. Police, local administration and rescue teams rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations amid darkness and rain. The injured and bodies were later pulled out of the gorge.
The injured were given first aid and shifted to Medical College, Tanda, where their condition is stated to be critical. The process of identifying the deceased is underway.
Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani said a case has been registered and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Authorities have begun informing the families of the victims.
