At least six people, including a child, lost their lives and three others sustained critical injuries in a tragic road accident in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh late Thursday night, police said. The accident occurred near Nathiya Nawagaon village on National Highway-30 under the Kotwali police station, when two cars travelling from opposite directions collided head-on.
According to officials, both vehicles were allegedly speeding, resulting in a powerful impact that left the cars completely mangled.
Superintendent of Police Nikhil Rakhecha said six people died on the spot due to the severity of the crash. The deceased included three women, two men, and a child.
Three other individuals were seriously injured and were rushed to Kanker Medical College Hospital by ambulance. Doctors have stated that their condition remains critical and they are under close medical supervision.
Preliminary investigation revealed that seven members of the Mandavi family from Udkuda village in the Charama area were returning from a wedding in Chivaraj village when their car collided with another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. Most of the victims were travelling in the same vehicle.
Police and emergency response teams reached the scene soon after receiving information and carried out rescue operations.
“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination,” Rakhecha said.
Officials added that statements from the injured will be recorded once their condition stabilises to determine the exact cause of the accident. Further investigation is currently underway.
