The brutal killing of Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal by his fiancée, Siya Goyal, is making the headlines for several weeks now, thanks to an alarming conspiracy that came to light due to the Pune police inquiry. While revelations came forth, it was noticed that the murder bore uncanny resemblance to the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi— the victims being thrown off a cliff by their partners. It is believed that Siya Goyal and her boyfriend and co-conspirator, Chetan Chaudhary, had been inspired by the conspiracy created by Sonam Raghuvanshi to murder her husband. Police sources aware of the case describe it as "a tale of a criminal mind, elaborate conspiracy, and cold-blooded murder."
There may be some obvious similarities, but the police have enough reasons to believe that Goyal learned from Sonam Raghuvanshi’s mistakes, coming up with an even stronger plan with more foolproof alibis, which were initially hard to break. But it was only in the course of investigation that the police made an epiphany of sorts about the situation. Just as in solving any intricate tale, the police had to wade through several layers of lies before reaching the stage where the suspect confessed to his actions. It is important to note, though, that a confession in police custody does not hold much weight in court.
It was observed by the officers that the murder plan occurred in reality exactly the same way as it was conceived by Goyal's mind, moving flawlessly from inside her mind to actions in the outside world— this being a carefully thought-out move on behalf of a woman who saw murder as the only solution to escaping her marriage to Agarwal. When asked whether Goyal had any characteristics of a naturally criminal mind, an officer dealing with the case said that this seemed like a crime motivated by necessity, driven by relationships, twisted thinking, and the transactional nature of the arrangement of the two families. Various reasons have been behind this decision, including social pressures and family pressures, along with other motivating factors that resulted in the decision to eliminate Agarwal.
In this stage, both Goyal and Chaudhary have not shown any form of regret or remorse for what they have done. As reported by the detectives, whereas time in jail usually softens even the toughest person, the realisation that they are in such a condition may come to the two only with the passage of time. The police credit sustained interrogation for the breakthrough, noting that without it, the pair might have escaped justice altogether. Although Agarwal's family refused to believe his death was accidental, the police also harboured immediate doubts, particularly because the specific spot from which he fell at Lohagad Fort was not considered dangerous compared to other areas along the trek.
It has now been revealed that the couple conducted extensive research while planning the murder, specifically reviewing news reports concerning the Raja Raghuvanshi case, which had been orchestrated by his newly-wed wife, Sonam. However, the execution differed; while Raghuvanshi was murdered before his body was flung from a cliff on a remote trek in Meghalaya, Agarwal was pushed off the cliff while still alive. Goyal and Chaudhary reportedly pushed him together, ensuring they had enough physical strength to send him into the gorge below.
Digital forensics have supported this theory. Interestingly, she also looked up whether women are subjected to physical force in police custody and searched for the specific legal rights of female prisoners. A second mobile phone recovered from the Goyal residence has been sent for forensic examination, which investigators hope will yield further clues regarding the timeline of the planning.
This case has had profound implications for Uma Raghuvanshi, the mother of Raja Raghuvanshi, who made an observation about how the conduct of Goyal stirred up old wounds related to her son’s death. She observed a similarity between the two cases, particularly the apparent lack of regret for their actions on the part of the perpetrators of both crimes. Another point of concern was that since Sonam Raghuvanshi is on bail pending trial in Shillong, people in similar situations may feel justified in not facing the full weight of their crime.
