— A pall of grief and horror has engulfed the Pandaveshwar area of Durgapur in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district following the discovery of two human skeletons in a children’s park, suspected to be those of twin sisters who went missing more than five months ago.
The macabre find was made on Saturday evening in the bushes of Dihi Park, near the Kumardihi locality, by local residents who promptly alerted police personnel from the Pandaveshwar station.
Family members of the missing girls were brought to the site, where they reportedly identified the clothing and shoes recovered near the remains as those belonging to the 10-year-old siblings.
Abhishek Gupta, deputy commissioner of police (east), Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, said, “The recovered skeletons are likely those of the two sisters who went missing five months ago. We have found their clothes and shoes at the site. However, a DNA test will be conducted to confirm their identities. The investigation is currently underway."
The twin girls had vanished without a trace on December 1 while playing near their residence in the Kumardihi area. A formal complaint was filed by the family, but repeated searches yielded no leads until now.
The sudden discovery has left the community reeling, with police deploying additional personnel in the area due to the sensitivity of the case and to maintain public order.
The circumstances under which the skeletal remains came to be in the park are yet to be ascertained. Investigators are focusing on reconstructing the events surrounding the girls’ disappearance and suspected deaths, as locals struggle to come to terms with the grim development.
