Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has demanded compensation for people affected by the windstorm and heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley.
He urged the administration to remain alert as the MeT Department issued avalanche warnings for six districts in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, the NC president also called upon party cadres, including office bearers and legislators, to step out and provide support to people amid the bad weather conditions.
The senior Abdullah said, “The much-awaited precipitation has brought relief to the land and its people, offering respite after prolonged dryness.” He also advocated financial assistance for families affected by gusty winds and adverse weather conditions and sought compensation for those who suffered losses.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that despite causing losses and damage to infrastructure in the Valley, the recent snowfall was much needed for the region.
While taking stock of the situation on Friday evening, he said, “The windstorm had disrupted the power generation capacity, as electricity supply had reduced to 100 MW against the normal 1,700 MW.”
He added that the restoration of essential services in the region was the government’s top priority, including roads, transport, medical services, water supply, and electricity.
He said that the snowfall was much needed and celebrated by the people of Kashmir and the Jammu and Kashmir government alike, since the snowfall received towards the end of Chillai-Kalan is important for replenishing water bodies.
“With the fresh snowfall in Kashmir, we are hoping to see a surge in tourism in the coming days,” he said. According to the MeT Department, Jammu and Kashmir is likely to be hit by another western disturbance with more rain and snowfall from Monday.
