The beautiful Seraj Assembly constituency in Mandi district, known for its peaceful valleys and quiet landscapes, is now facing serious damage after heavy rain triggered landslides in the area on June 30. Once a popular and scenic area, Seraj has turned into a danger zone, putting many lives and livelihoods of hundreds of villagers at risk.

Landslides have hit several parts of the valley, causing major soil erosion and rockfall. Devdhar village suffered some of the worst damage, with homes and plum orchards destroyed by falling debris from nearby slopes. From Devdhar to Janjehli, landslides struck dangerously close to resident’s homes.

Even Tandi, the home village of Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, once seen as safe geologically, is now showing signs of vulnerability. Thakur said, “In the present conditions, it is difficult to predict which area can be considered safe for habitation. The situation demands immediate attention and scientific investigation.”

Villagers from Bada, Kandi, Anah, Sharan, Thunag Daizy, and Pakhrair have been hit hard by both flashfloods and landslides. Many lost their homes and fruit  orchards, which are their main source of income. Now, they are trying to rebuild their lives while living in fear of more disasters.

People and political leaders are asking for a proper scientific and environmental study to find out why these landslides are happening more often. While some blame unregulated road construction and illegal dumping in several affected areas, others say the problem may be deeper geological vulnerabilities.

Jai Ram Thakur, along with Congress leaders Vijay Pal Singh and Jagdish Reddy, has stressed the need for an urgent scientific study. “Only a comprehensive study can help identify the underlying reasons and provide a road map for disaster mitigation,” Thakur said.

As the rains continue, fear and uncertainty grow in Seraj. Experts warn that without quick action, the hills could become even more unstable, leading to bigger tragedies in the future.
