At least one soldier was killed during an encounter with terrorists in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials reported. The gunfight began in Modergam village after security forces launched a search operation based on intelligence inputs.
Security forces have cordoned off all entry and exit points to the village, where they have surrounded two to three terrorists in their hideouts.
The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the encounter on microblogging site X, stating, "Encounter started at Modergam Village of #Kulgam District. Police and Security Forces are on the job. Further details shall follow."
As of the latest update, the encounter was still ongoing, and more information was awaited.
This incident follows last month’s Pulwama encounter, where two top commanders from The Resistance Front, an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, were killed by security forces.
Security forces, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, have successfully eliminated multiple terrorists this year.
The encounter coincided with the ongoing Amarnath Yatra in the Kashmir Valley. This is a developing story; more details will follow.
