Lance Naik Manish Thakur, a soldier of the 3rd Dogra Regiment who lost his life in a landslide in Sikkim, was cremated with full military honours on Wednesday near his native village Badaban, located about 17 km from Nahan in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district.
The 27-year-old soldier was killed on Sunday evening when a major landslide struck an army camp in Chhaten, near Lachen town in Mangan district of Sikkim, according to army sources.
His mortal remains were brought to the village from Chandigarh earlier in the day in an Army vehicle, wrapped in the national flag. As the body arrived, villagers gathered in large numbers and raised slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Amar Shaheed Manish Thakur Amar Rahe” in tribute.
The funeral ceremony saw an outpouring of grief and respect. Thakur was laid to rest with full military honours. His younger brother lit the funeral pyre.
Sirmaur Additional District Magistrate L.R. Verma and Superintendent of Police Nishchint Singh Negi laid wreaths on behalf of the state government. Several senior military officials, local political leaders, and community members attended the cremation.
Dignitaries present included Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap, Paonta Sahib MLA Sukhram Chaudhary, state BJP President Rajiv Bindal, former MLA Baldev Tomar, social worker Nathuram Chauhan, Congress block president Gyan Chaudhary, and Major Deepak Dhawa, Deputy Director of the Sirmaur Sainik Welfare Board.
Lance Naik Thakur had been married just three months ago. He is survived by his wife, parents, and younger brother.
