At least one soldier and a terrorist were killed, and five soldiers were injured—two critically—in an encounter along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Macchil sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district on Saturday morning, officials said.

According to officials, an exchange of fire took place near the Kumkadi post in the Trehgam sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

"Indian Army troops have foiled a Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) attack on the Line of Control against Indian forces.

The BAT team involved in the attack is suspected to have regular Pakistan Army troops, including their SSG commandos who work closely with terrorist organisations," sources said.

The BAT forces have carried out multiple attacks on Indian forces along the LoC in J&K.

The sources also informed that the attack occurred under the supervision of the 32 POK Brigade of the 12 Infantry Division of the Pakistani Army, stationed in the Kel Sector.

The Pakistani Sharda Battalion area supported the SSG and terrorists, with the launch pad suspected to be Lashdat.

This latest encounter comes just days after a soldier, identified as Jawan Naik (Gnr) Dilawar Khan, was killed in an overnight exchange of fire in Kupwara.

The Indian Army had launched an anti-terror operation in the Lolab area of Kupwara following information about possible terrorist movements.

Suspicious activities were noticed on Tuesday, and vigilant troops challenged the suspects. In response, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire, leading to a gun battle.

"In the ensuing firefight, one terrorist was eliminated and a non-commissioned officer was injured. Operation is in progress," the Army stated on a microblogging platform.

The injured soldier later succumbed to his injuries, and a terrorist was also killed in the encounter.
