Tamil Nadu is set to establish a national anti-doping education and awareness centre in Chennai, which will serve as a national hub for research, training, and capacity-building initiatives, according to sources in the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department.
The proposed centre will be developed in partnership with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and is expected to play a key role in promoting clean sport and enhancing awareness among athletes, coaches, and support personnel across the country.
The state has also proposed setting up a national sports science, sports medicine, recovery, and rehabilitation centre in Madurai. Leveraging the existing sports science ecosystem, the facility will provide comprehensive services focused on performance enhancement, injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation for athletes from across India.

As part of efforts to strengthen aquatic sports, the government has proposed the development of world-class Olympic-standard aquatic complexes in Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Tiruvarur, and Tirupur districts. The initiative seeks to build on Tamil Nadu’s long-standing legacy of producing swimmers who have excelled at national and international competitions.
To support the growing interest of young athletes in indoor sports, international-standard multipurpose indoor stadiums have also been proposed for Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli, Ranipet, and Cuddalore districts. In a bid to further expand the talent pool, the state plans to strengthen the Khelo India ecosystem by establishing additional Khelo India Centres and district-level training facilities across Tamil Nadu. The objective is to ensure that at least two priority sporting disciplines are promoted and supported in every district.
Recognising the state's strong cycling culture and proven track record in the sport, the department has additionally proposed the creation of an international-standard indoor cycling velodrome in Coimbatore that meets Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) specifications.
Alongside the velodrome, a national cycling high-performance centre will also be established in the city, aimed at nurturing elite athletes and capitalising on Tamil Nadu’s vibrant cycling ecosystem to develop future champions.
