Soren govt announces ₹1000 monthly for state’s BPL women

The Jharkhand Government will provide Rs 1000 every month to all women belonging to the BPL category every month, Chief Minister Hemant Soren today announced during a programme here on Wednesday.

Soren, while addressing people during a benefits distribution programme of ‘Jharkhand Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojna’ (JMMSY) said that after providing financial aid to more than 40 lakh women in the State, the government will also include girls from the age of 18 years in the scheme.

Under the JMMSY Jharkhand government is providing Rs 1000 every month to women of the age group of 21 to 49 years belonging to the BPL category.

The government has claimed to add about 40 lakh beneficiaries in the scheme and is organising programmes in every division of the State, where the chief minister is transferring the benefits to beneficiaries’ accounts through direct benefits transfer.

Notably, women above the age of 19 years are already included in the list of beneficiaries for the universal pension scheme run by the government and are getting Rs 1000 every month as a pension.

With this announcement all women above the age of 17 belonging to the BPL category will come under the beneficiaries list in Jharkhand.

However, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Jharkhand High Court seeking a ban on the JMMSY. The petitioner has accused the government of offering free schemes to attract voters ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

He has also referenced a Supreme Court ruling that states that nothing should be distributed for free to the citizens. He contends that the scheme has been introduced purely for electoral purposes, which he believes is a violation of the Supreme Court's guidelines.
