Govindachamy, a life convict in the highly publicised 2011 Soumya murder case, was on Saturday transferred to the Viyyur central jail in Thrissur district of Kerala, a day after he escaped from Kannur prison and was arrested hours later. The direction to relocate
Govindachamy alias Govindaswamy (41), who has lost his left hand, to Viyyur was late on Friday night, but the decision was to shift him in the morning, police reported.

A case was registered regarding his jailbreak and he was produced before a judicial magistrate and sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
Subsequent to the jailbreak, three prison officials of Kannur Central Jail were suspended forthwith, in the wake of complaints from all sides that the convict received inside assistance in escaping.
The opposition Congress party had criticised the government in this regard. It has called the government "incompetent" and accused the government of giving "inside help" for the jailbreak. It also wanted a CBI inquiry into the case.
Soumya, a 23-year-old woman from Manjakkad near Shornur, was raped and killed allegedly by Govindachamy when she was commuting on a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shornur on 1 February 2011. Govindachamy was found guilty in this case.
