A married couple was tragically killed and two other people injured after a speeding ambulance allegedly struck several motorbikes at a set of traffic lights in the city on Saturday night, police confirmed on Sunday.
The incident is reported to have occurred around 11 pm at the KH junction, near the Shanti Nagar bus stand.
The ambulance driver, who allegedly fled the scene immediately following the collision, was traced and detained by police officers on Sunday morning.
According to witness accounts, the police stated that the fast-moving ambulance apparently lost control, ploughing into several two-wheeled vehicles waiting at the traffic lights. It is alleged that the ambulance dragged one of the motorbikes for a few metres before finally crashing into a nearby signal control post and stopping.
The deceased couple, a man aged approximately 40 and his 33-year-old wife, were rushed to hospital straight after the accident but sadly succumbed to their injuries. The two other injured individuals were also taken to hospital for treatment, police added.
Following the collision, an outraged crowd pushed and overturned the ambulance, amid claims that the vehicle was not carrying a patient at the time of the incident, police noted.
A case has been registered, and police are currently questioning the ambulance driver.
