Sports icons seek museum to preserve Fauja Singh's legacy

Though collections and exhibitions across the world have displayed Fauja Singh's memorabilia, Punjab does not have a museum dedicated to him so far

While Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced the naming of a school and a stadium in marathon runner Fauja Singh’s native Beas village after the legendary athlete, veterans, sporting icons and Fauja Singh’s family have also demanded a museum to preserve his legacy.

 

Though collections and exhibitions across the world have displayed Fauja Singh's memorabilia, Punjab does not have a museum dedicated to him so far. His belongings are preserved at his home in Beas village and his son’s home in London.

 

Fauja Singh’s son Harvinder Singh said his most exhaustive collection of medals and clothes, his watch and other belongings are here. It is indeed our dream to have a lasting memorial in his name. The memory of a legend of his stature must not be forgotten.”

 

Cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh said the museum could possibly be set up in a section of the school being named after him. Wrestler and former Director, Sports, Punjab, Kartar Pehelwan, said a man like Fauja Singh can act as a huge inspiration for countless youngsters.

 

Arjuna awardee basketball player and AAP leader Sajjan Singh Cheema said NRI friends and associates of Fauja Singh like Ranjit Singh Khaira and Sydney-based Ghirnamat Singh had expressed their desire to start a marathon dedicated to Fauja Singh at his village from next year.
