Kumar Sunny Raj, former SP of Ranaghat, will take charge as the new SP of Murshidabad. And Amit Kumar Sau, Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) of Kolkata Police, will take charge as the new SP of Jangipur police district from today.
The West Bengal government on Friday transferred the Superintendents of Police (SP) of Murshidabad and Jangipur, both of which have recently been in the spotlight following incidents of communal unrest.
A formal notification issued by Nabanna, the state secretariat, announced the transfer of Murshidabad SP Surya Pratap Yadav, who has now been appointed to the Narayani Battalion in Cooch Behar. Similarly, Anand Roy, SP of Jangipur police district, has been posted to the third battalion of Eastern Frontier Rifle (EFR).
To fill their positions, the administration has appointed Kumar Sunny Raj, previously the SP of Ranaghat, as the new SP of Murshidabad. Meanwhile, Amit Kumar Sau, Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) of Kolkata Police, will take charge as the new SP of Jangipur police district.
Additional reshuffles include Ashish Maurya taking over as SP of Ranaghat and Anshuman Saha, formerly with the Narayani Battalion in Cooch Behar, being posted to Barrackpore.
The transfers come in the wake of recent communal clashes in Murshidabad and Jangipur, which resulted in loss of three lives, looting, and vandalism. These incidents triggered public outcry and raised serious questions about the police's initial response, with many accusing law enforcement of inaction during the early stages of the violence.
This has led to speculation over whether the transfers are linked to the unrest. However, state officials maintain that the reshuffle is part of a routine administrative process, urging the public not to read too much into the timing.
“This is a routine transfer. It would be incorrect to assign any special motive or interpretation to it,” said a source in the administration.
