The Sri Akal Takht Sahib has categorically refused to accept the anti-sacrilege law, terming it unacceptable on the basis that it was not formulated with the consent of the Sikh Panth and ignores the centuries-old religious practices. In an important turn of events after this position, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, has been called to attend an appearance at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on May 8.
The decision was taken during a Panthic gathering in Amritsar, chaired by the Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj. The Speaker is expected to explain how a law with such deep religious implications was pushed through without any prior consultation with the Sikh community.
Central to the rejection is the argument that the law fails to clearly define the specific responsibilities of granthis and gurdwara management committees. The Jathedar emphasised that because the issue strikes at the very heart of the Sikh Panth, any related decisions must be made at a Panthic level rather than being dictated solely by the government. He further asserted that it is vital to uncover the root causes behind incidents of sacrilege and called on the authorities to ensure the full truth is made public.
