Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded the coldest night of the season, with temperatures dipping to minus 5.3 degrees Celsius on the previous night, officials said.

Meanwhile, the cold wave conditions have further intensified across the Kashmir valley as the minimum temperature plummeted several degrees below the freezing point, causing several water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake, to freeze, officials said on Tuesday.

“Srinagar city recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius, down from minus 3.4 degrees Celsius the previous night,” officials said.

The officials also noted that the water supply lines in the majority of the city and its adjacent areas in the valley were frozen due to the ongoing cold.

Famous tourist and ski destinations recorded minus 4 degrees Celsius, which is one degree better than main city areas.

Pahalgam, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Interestingly, a sleepy hamlet located on the outskirts of Pampore town was the coldest place in the valley, with temperatures dropping to minus 8.5 degrees Celsius.

Furthermore, the Met Office Srinagar has predicted mainly dry weather conditions up to December 26, with the possibility of light rain and snowfall over the higher reaches on December 21-22.

The minimum temperature is likely to fall further in the valley, subsequently intensifying the ongoing cold wave conditions in the coming week, it added.

Meanwhile, the doctors have advised people to take proper precautions during the ongoing cold wave conditions.
