Balidan Stambh (pillar of sacrifice), a martyr's memorial in the heart of Srinagar, has been completed and will open to the public during the Independence Day function on August 15, Smart City officials have said.
Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for Balidan Stambh at Pratap Park in June last year.
"The work on Balidan Stambh has been completed, and it is ready for Independence Day celebrations on August 15," said Owais Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City Limited.
The project was overseen by the Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) and was completed at the cost of approximately ₹ 7crore.
Meanwhile, for upcoming independence celebrations, a full dress rehearsal was conducted on Tuesday in preparation for the event at the Bakhshi stadium.
The pillar, also known as the Martyrs' Memorial, was built in Srinagar to honour the sacrifices of the Indian armed forces, including soldiers and officers, who have laid down their lives in the line of duty in Jammu and Kashmir.
"This is a significant achievement due to the hard work of all workers and the Srinagar Smart City team," Ahmad added, urging people in the city to visit the memorial which honours those who sacrificed their lives for the nation, especially in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Balidan Stambh stands 60 metres high and has been designed in the shape of a soldier's gun.
The names of 4,877 martyrs are inscribed on 52 pillars, including the 543 soldiers who died in the Kargil War and 71 from various districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
