An encounter between security forces and militants is underway in Khanyar, located in downtown Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday.
A senior police officer reported that a joint team of police and security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Khanyar based on precise intelligence.
As the team neared the target area, militants hiding there opened fire on the search party, sparking the ongoing encounter.
Earlier, officials confirmed, “A CASO (cordon and search operation) is underway in the Khanyar area of the city.”
The operation was launched following reports of militant presence.
The Kashmir valley has recently seen an increase in terrorist activities, with five attacks already reported, resulting in numerous casualties.
Official records indicate that eight civilians have lost their lives, and nine others sustained injuries in these incidents.
Additionally, five security personnel have been killed and three critically injured, with one ambush occurring near Botapathri in Gulmarg.
Despite intensified efforts, security forces have yet to locate and neutralise the militants responsible for these recent attacks, which have plagued the region since 18 October.
Today’s encounter in a densely populated downtown area raises concerns about militant infiltration into Srinagar’s inner city. This is a developing story, and further details will follow.
