Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging swift diplomatic intervention to secure the release of 35 fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy since November 9.
Stalin’s letter — written on Tuesday emphasised that these repeated arrests impact the livelihoods and well-being of fishermen and their families.
This year has seen the highest number of arrests in seven years, he pointed out, calling for an end to this disruption.
Twelve fishermen from Nagapattinam were detained, adding to the 33 Rameswaram fishers arrested on November 9 with their boats.
Additionally 12 fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district were apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy on November 11, allegedly for trespassing and fishing in the island waters, a fisheries department official said on Tuesday.

Their counterparts in Rameswaram staged a protest on Tuesday in Pamban demanding the Central government’s immediate intervention to secure the release of the Nagapattinam fishermen and also others from the state arrested by the Lankan navy.
