The Jammu and Kashmir administration is currently reviewing a proposal to enrol children of all government employees in state-run schools.
This proposal, submitted by a local organisation to the monitoring and grievance cell of the Lieutenant Governor’s office, has garnered significant attention and is currently under consideration as per reports.
The submitted proposal aims to enhance the quality of education in government schools, which have seen a decline in admissions, where standards are considered below par.
Having government employees' children in these schools will mean more accountability and direct involvement of officials, potentially leading to better facilities, teaching standards, and overall performance.
Following the submission, the Lieutenant Governor’s office sent an official communication to the School Education Department (SED), instructing them to take necessary actions and submit an action taken report.
The SED has since communicated with the Directors of School Education in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions, seeking feedback on the proposal.
The Director of School Education in Jammu has issued an official communication to all Chief Education Officers (CEOs) in the division, who have further forwarded it to Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) and heads of institutions for their input.
The officers have been directed to submit their comments on the proposal by August 12, 2024.
As discussions continue, the School Education Department is yet to reach a consensus regarding the implementation of the proposal.
Principal Secretary SED, Alok Kumar, informed reporters, “I am yet to make up my mind on it,” and provided no further details.
If implemented, the proposal could catalyse improving the quality of education in state-run schools, ensuring that government officials have a vested interest in the public education system.
