Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that the central government is committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir following the assembly elections.
Shah assured that statehood will be reinstated once the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are concluded.
He described this moment as historic, noting that J&K is moving towards elections under the national flag and constitution—a change made possible by the abrogation of Article 370 by the Modi government.
Shah criticised the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance for attempting to revive the “old system” in the union territory. He emphasised the NDA government's commitment to preventing the resurgence of terrorism, asserting that the government will not tolerate any injustice against marginalised communities, including Gujjars, Paharis, Bakerwals, and Dalits, who were recently granted reservations by the BJP administration.
Shah is on a two-day official visit to Jammu to bolster the BJP’s election campaign ahead of the three-phase legislative elections starting on September 18. On the first day of his visit, he unveiled the party’s manifesto and held meetings with senior party leaders and workers to strategise for the polls.
“The forthcoming elections in J&K are historic because, for the first time since Independence, the polls are being conducted under our national flag and constitution, unlike the past practice of two flags and two constitutions,” Shah stated at a BJP workers’ rally in Jammu. He further added, “We have only one Prime Minister from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and he is Modi.”
Shah also targeted the National Conference-Congress alliance, accusing them of trying to push J&K back into the throes of terrorism, despite the government’s success in reducing terrorism by 70 per cent.
“The National Conference and the Congress will never be able to form a government in J&K. Be confident about it,” Shah told party workers, urging them to support BJP candidates for a successful outcome in the upcoming elections.
