The Arunachal Pradesh branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA-AP) has announced a 24-hour shutdown of routine medical services on Saturday in response to the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The IMA-AP’s president, Dr. Kesang Wangdi Thongdok, expressed deep frustration over what he described as the government's inadequate response to the investigation.
The statewide protest will see the closure of outpatient departments, elective surgeries, and non-essential services in both public and private healthcare facilities across Arunachal Pradesh.
Despite the shutdown, emergency and in-patient services will continue to operate as usual, Dr. Thongdok assured.
In addition to demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible, the IMA-AP has called for the swift implementation of a central law to safeguard doctors and healthcare workers from violence and threats.
The protest is part of a broader nationwide movement by the medical community to seek justice and greater protection for its members.
