The Ambala Special Task Force (STF) seized a hand grenade from a vehicle parked at a workshop in Shahabad area of Kurukshetra on Wednesday. According to information, the recovery was made after disclosure by Surya Pratap, also known as Noni Rana, a resident of Kurukshetra. Following this, a case was filed at Shahabad police station.
The STF Ambala said the accused was arrested on May 11. During the operation, police also recovered an illegal pistol, a magazine, and two live cartridges from him.
DSP STF Ambala Aman Kumar said a joint operation was carried out by Counter Intelligence Punjab Police and STF Ambala unit, during which a hand grenade was recovered. He said the team had earlier apprehended Surya Pratap and seized weapons from him. During initial questioning, it came out that the accused was working with associates based overseas and was involved in extortion from businessmen and arranging firing incidents against those who refused to pay money.
During remand, the accused revealed that he had got two hand grenades. He had kept one in a car at his workshop in Shahabad, while the second was returned. The grenade was later seized from Ladwa Road, in front of Shahabad Sugar Mill. The Bomb Disposal Squad was called immediately and safely disposed of the explosive.
The DSP added that efforts were on to trace the second grenade as well. The accused also said the blast was planned linked to an extortion case. He was allegedly in contact with handlers abroad who directed him to carry out the attack. Further probe is underway.
