Posters of murder accused Amritpal Singh Mehron surface ahead of bypoll.

As Ludhiana West gears up for the upcoming Assembly bypoll, flex boards glorifying Amritpal Singh Mehron, the key accused in the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as Kamal Kaur Bhabi, have surfaced across the city, sparking controversy and concerns over law and order.

The posters, reportedly installed by radical Sikh groups and members of Mehron’s outfit Qaum De Rakhe, hail him as “Kaum Da Heera” (jewel of the community) and “Izzatan De Rakhe” (protector of honour), despite his alleged involvement in a brutal crime.

Even though glorifying acts of violence through posters is illegal, the local administration—currently focused on the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll—is yet to respond to the display of flex-boards portraying Amritpal Singh Mehron as a “hero”.

Notably, the Bathinda police have already issued a lookout notice for Mehron.

The flex-boards also breach printing press regulations, as they do not include mandatory details such as the name of the printer or the individual or organisation responsible for printing them.

Originally from Mehron village in Moga district, Amritpal Mehron, the accused who was once a motorcycle mechanic, fled to Dubai after the body of Kanchan Kumari was discovered in her car near Adesh University on June 11—two days after she was reported missing. The Bathinda police, who cracked the case soon after, have issued a lookout circular for the accused.

A controversial statement from Akal Takht head granthi Malkit Singh in support of Mehron has reportedly boosted his sympathisers and further fuelled efforts to mobilise public sentiment in his favour.

As the deceased influencer had been residing with her mother and siblings in Lachhman Nagar Colony, Ludhiana, radical groups appear to be focusing their activities in the city and surrounding areas. Kanchan’s decomposed body was discovered inside her car at Adesh University, two days after she went missing on June 9.

The Bathinda police swiftly solved the case following the recovery and subsequently issued a lookout notice for Amritpal Singh Mehron, who had already fled to Dubai to avoid arrest.

ACP Harjinder Singh Gill stated that SHOs and beat officers have been instructed to strictly enforce guidelines related to such matters.
