Vijayawada City Police in Andhra Pradesh have apprehended four to five suspects in connection with the incident where stones were thrown at Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. An official stated on Sunday that they would be probing the offense as a potential 'attempt to murder' case.
The incident occurred on Saturday night near Vivekananda School Centre in Vijayawada's Singh Nagar, where unidentified individuals hurled a stone at the Chief Minister while he was engaged in election campaigning. The stone struck his left temple, causing a minor injury.
Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Ratan Tata informed that a case has been filed under IPC Section 307, pertaining to attempted murder. The authorities have identified several suspects and are currently interrogating them.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising six officers and four policemen has been formed to analyze video footage and technical data to ascertain the identities of the assailants.
According to Tata, the suspects are local residents, and he expressed confidence in their ability to apprehend the perpetrators within a few days.
Following the incident, there has been a verbal exchange between the YSRCP and TDP leaders. YSRCP General Secretary S Ramakrishna Reddy alleged that the attack was premeditated, accusing the TDP of instigating violence against Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Meanwhile, TDP leaders have condemned the attack and called for an impartial inquiry, questioning the timing and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Y S Sharmila expressed concern over the incident and urged everyone to condemn it, while stating her belief that it was accidental.
Despite the attack, Jagan Mohan Reddy remains undeterred and is expected to resume his election campaign on Monday.
The incident comes amidst the ongoing preparations for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh scheduled for May 13, with vote counting slated for June 4.
