The situation in Manipur remained tense but stable on Wednesday following violent clashes between students and security forces during a march to Raj Bhavan the previous day.
Authorities have extended the curfew in Imphal, which was imposed on Tuesday afternoon, with additional security personnel patrolling the streets to prevent further unrest.
“The situation remains tense but under control,” a senior police officer stated, emphasising efforts to maintain order.
The clashes erupted when students, protesting to demand the removal of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the state's security advisor, attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan.
The situation turned volatile in Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas as security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the stone-pelting protesters.
According to a student body, more than 55 students were injured during the skirmishes and were later admitted to RIMS hospital.
In response to the escalating tensions, the state government on Tuesday amended an order stating that internet services suspension due to the intensified protests would "only apply to five valley districts".
In a late-night development, Raj Bhavan released a statement saying that student representatives met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum.
The students urged the Governor to address their demands, and he assured them that he would take necessary steps in the best interest of both students and the people of Manipur.
Meanwhile, search and area domination operations continue in Kangpokpi district, where police recovered arms and explosives during a security sweep, further highlighting the delicate situation in the state.
