Sub-zero chill freezes life across Kashmir

The Kashmir Valley continues to reel under an intense cold wave, with temperatures plummeting below freezing. Authorities have declared winter vacations for schools as the region braces for the onset of Chillai-e-Kalan, the harsh 40-day winter period.

A serene yet frozen landscape in the Kashmir Valley that is currently grapples with sub-zero temperatures during an intense cold wave. Tourists brave the icy chill to witness the winter wonderland.


The Kashmir Valley remains in the grip of an intense cold wave, with night temperatures staying below freezing despite a slight decrease.

 

According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, the cold wave is set to persist across the region for the next few days.

 

The weather is expected to remain dry until December 21, the date marking the start of the 40-day harsh winter phase known as Chillai-e-Kalan.

 

In response to the prevailing conditions, authorities have announced winter vacations for schools up to the 10th grade in the valley.

 

Srinagar recorded a low of -3.4°C during the nights of Saturday and Sunday, 2.2°C below the seasonal norm.

 

Among the region's popular tourist destinations, Pahalgam emerged as the coldest location, with temperatures plummeting to -8.4°C a day ago, improving slightly to -4.8°C on Sunday, though still 0.7°C below normal.

 

Gulmarg witnessed a marginal rise in temperatures, recording -3.8°C compared to the previous day’s -7.6°C, 1.2°C above normal for the meadow-rich region in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

 

While the recent snowfall and rainfall have improved daytime temperatures, the majority of weather stations in the valley report sub-zero nighttime temperatures.
