A 25-year-old Sudanese student was stabbed to death and another critically injured by a group of six assailants near a private university in Phagwara early Thursday morning, the police said.

The deceased, identified as Mohammed Wada Bala Yousif Ahmed, had been staying in a paying guest accommodation in Maheru Colony. His injured friend, Ahmed Mohammed Nour, also a Sudanese national, has been admitted to a hospital in Jalandhar for treatment, the police said.

According to the police complaint, Nour said the incident occurred while he, Wada, and three female friends were offering morning prayers. They were allegedly approached by six men, two of whom were armed with knives. Nour said one of the assailants demanded his sister’s phone number. When confronted, the group attacked both men, stabbing them in the chest before fleeing the scene.

Local resident Prabhat Dubey came to the aid of the injured students and rushed them to the hospital, where Wada was declared brought dead, the police confirmed.

Based on Nour’s statement, the police have identified the six accused as Abdul Ahad (a resident of Karnataka), and Kunwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoaib, Sushank Shaggy, and Yash Vardhan Rajput — all residents of Maheru Colony.

Phagwara Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and efforts are underway to apprehend the accused. She added that the Sudanese embassy and the victim’s family have been informed of the incident.
