Summer break extended in Kashmir due to heat wave spell

In response to the persistent heatwave gripping the Kashmir Valley, J&K Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Wednesday announced extension of summer vacations for colleges until Sunday.

In response to the persistent heatwave gripping the Kashmir Valley, J&K Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Wednesday announced extension of summer vacations for colleges until Sunday.

 

The government has said this is important for safety of small children who are not habitual of extreme weather condition as harsh as this year experienced during the month of June. The announcement was made during an official event, where the minister said the decision was taken in view of the intense weather conditions.“As summer vacations for colleges are nearing their end, we have decided to extend them till Sunday due to the prevailing heatwave,” Itoo said.

 

She further stated that the government is closely monitoring the weather patterns before making a decision regarding the reopening of schools. “As far as vacations for schools are concerned, we will review the situation soon, keeping the weather forecast in view,” she added.

 

Previously, summer vacations for colleges were slated to end on July 4, while schools were scheduled to resume on July 7.

For Kashmir Division the summer vacations earlier in educational institutions used to be just for few days as a matter of policy, with temperatures witnessing only minimal rise. However, the Valley is experiencing continuous hot weather this year adding to woes of the citizens on many fronts. 

 

Pertinently, Srinagar hits hottest June temperatures which is believed to be seen after decades. Even the night  temperatures reach warmest levels since 1990 across Kashmir valley. What is bothering the people across Kashmir is above normal temperature consistently during nights which would remain pleasantly cool during summer time. The night temperatures durinng last few days were unusually high, with the city experiencing its warmest June night since 1990 at 23.2 degrees Celsius. The all-time highest June night temperature remains 24.6 degrees on June 29, 1978.

 

Other regions in Kashmir are also seeing unprecedented heat, with Pahalgam recording its third-highest June night temperature at 16.8 degrees, Kokernag at 20.4 degrees, and Kupwara at 21.1 degrees, marking its fifth-highest.The prolonged heatwave has disrupted daily activities, with residents experiencing both high day and night temperatures. This year's heatwave is a reminder of the changing climate patterns impacting the region.


Authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and take necessary precautions to safeguard against heat-related illnesses. Schools have been closed as a preventive measure, reflecting the seriousness of the heatwave's impact on the community.
