Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Kumar Singhal on Monday announced that Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who lost his life while trying to save lives during the Surajkund festival swing collapse, will be accorded the status of a martyr.
The DGP announced the move after meeting those injured in the hospital, stating that the family of the deceased officer would be given compensation of ₹1 crore, along with a government job for one eligible family member.
DGP Singhal said, “Inspector Jagdish Prasad sacrificed his life while saving the lives of others.”
Haryana Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma said that the injured were in stable condition and confirmed that a case had been registered against the swing owner.
He said that the incident would be probed by a committee headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), constituted the previous day.
A resident of Dengra village, Mathura district, in Uttar Pradesh, Inspector Jagdish Prasad had joined the Haryana Police as a sub-inspector in 1988 and was a recipient of the Police Medal for meritorious service.
His family includes his wife, Sudha Prasad, two daughters, Nidhi — Deepti — son, Gaurav.
On Saturday evening, Inspector Jagdish Prasad was killed while attempting to save lives, while at least 13 others were also injured, officials said.
