The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) carried out multiple surprise searches on Saturday across jails in Srinagar and Kupwara districts, officials said.
The search operation was launched as part of an ongoing drive to monitor activities inside jails and ensure that no prohibited material is being used or exchanged by inmates, they said.
Sources said, “Teams of Counter-Intelligence Kashmir carried out searches at Central Jail Srinagar and District Jail Kupwara today.”
These surprise checks are aimed at detecting any suspicious activity and strengthening the internal security of prisons that house some of the most notorious criminals, they added.
The searches were conducted in coordination with prison authorities. Sources said documentation, barracks, and inmate belongings were examined during the searches.
In a separate, related development, the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Handwara launched a surprise inspection across several areas of the northern region.
The drive, supervised by senior police officers, focused on verifying that SIM vendors were complying with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) regulations and law enforcement guidelines.
Officers inspected several outlets to ensure that vendors followed proper customer verification procedures before issuing SIM cards.
On Friday, similar drives were carried out in South Kashmir’s Shopian district and central Kashmir’s Srinagar district to prevent the misuse of SIM cards in the security-sensitive region.
