The Jammu and Kashmir Police, in a joint operation with the Army, on Thursday arrested a suspected individual in Rajouri’s Nowshera belt and recovered foreign-made pistols, magazines and live rounds from his possession, officials said.
The suspect, identified as Sachin Kumar of Sair in Nowshera, was caught in the Raipur area. During search, two foreign-made pistols (made in China and Turkey), along with four magazines and nearly 15 rounds of ammunition, were seized from him. A case has been registered at Nowshera police station under relevant sections and further investigation is underway.
In a separate development, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Wednesday confirmed that it had established 43 temporary high-altitude bases in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack.
These bases, located above 6,000 feet, serve as short-term camps for CRPF personnel to launch quick cordon-and-search operations against terrorists hiding in the upper reaches of the Union Territory. The first such base was set up in July 2025 and the total has since reached 43—26 in the Kashmir region and 17 in the Jammu region. Each base accommodates 16–25 CRPF personnel along with local police staff.
Security forces used one of these bases during the July 25 operation, code-named OP Mahadev, to eliminate three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack.
Officials estimate that about two local and around 100 foreign terrorists are currently active in the Union Territory.
