A suspected drone attack targeted the high-security Srinagar Airport late Friday evening, prompting immediate activation of air defence systems and other countermeasures, officials confirmed.
Residents living near the airport reported hearing at least five to six loud explosions, describing the experience as unprecedented. "We have never heard anything like this before," several locals said, as panic spread across the area.
The suspected drone strike comes just a day after Indian defence forces successfully foiled an attempted attack by Pakistan’s military, involving drones and missiles aimed at Indian installations. The back-to-back incidents have heightened security concerns across Jammu and Kashmir.
Following the incident, authorities imposed a complete blackout in Srinagar, urging residents to stay indoors. Loudspeakers at local mosques were used to instruct the public to switch off all lights as a precautionary measure.
Earlier in the evening, explosions were also reported in the Jammu region and parts of south Kashmir. Sirens were sounded, and large swathes of the union territory were plunged into darkness amid rising tensions.
Defence officials confirmed drone sightings in several sensitive locations, including Jammu, Samba, and the neighbouring Pathankot district in Punjab. These drones were being actively engaged by security forces, the officials added.
Further south, loud explosions were also heard in the vicinity of the Awantipora airbase in south Kashmir, indicating possible simultaneous activity in multiple locations.
