A suspected member of the Hill People’s Convention (Democratic) — HPC(D) — was shot dead in an overnight encounter with security forces in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Monday, officials said.
The gunfight erupted around 11 pm in the remote Jinamveil area under Mahur Police Station after personnel of the Assam Police Command Battalion responded to reports of armed activity in the region.
According to police, the incident began around 10 pm when a group of HPC(D) militants intercepted a vehicle at Chillei village in Jinamveil, threatened the driver, and fired two rounds into the air. Alerted by the gunshots, a team from a nearby Command Battalion camp moved towards the site.
As the security personnel approached the location, the militants allegedly opened fire, prompting an immediate retaliatory response. In the exchange that followed, one suspected militant — identified as Modi Hmar, also known as Memo, a resident of Boro Arkap village in Jinam Valley — was killed, Dima Hasao Police confirmed.
The body has been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.
Officials noted that although Jinam Valley falls under the jurisdiction of Mahur Police Station, reaching the area requires travelling through Harinagar in Silchar, underscoring the region’s difficult terrain and limited accessibility.
