Three suspected militants, including two teenagers, were airlifted from Imphal, Manipur to New Delhi for investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday night.
Acting on intelligence provided by the NIA, a joint operation conducted by Manipur Police and CRPF forces led to the apprehension of Thangjoel Haokip (19), Jangjoulen Khongsai (19), and Jangminlun Singson (45) in L Hengjol village.
The suspects are allegedly involved in various criminal activities, including a recent attack on a power grid using explosives in April 2024.
The arrests sparked protests in Kangpokpi district, demanding the immediate release of the detained individuals and the return of confiscated weapons.
In response, the Kuki Inpi organization called for a 12-hour shutdown across Kuki-dominated areas, protesting what they claim are injustices and atrocities committed by central security forces against the Kuki-Zo community.
Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills (KISH) endorsed the shutdown, which saw disruptions to daily activities including vehicular movement, school closures, and a halt to business operations except for essential services.
Protestors rallied under slogans such as "Arrest Injustice Not the Kukis" and "Grant us Union Territory," highlighting grievances against perceived discriminatory actions.
